RE: Linux - sieve - 01-26-2012

Because windows costs lodesofemone

RE: Linux - ProjectG - 01-26-2012

^ What sieve said as well as linux being mainly an OS for hosting servers. And its free.

RE: Linux - Albuca - 01-26-2012

*face palm*

Winblows is the worst piece of crap to run a server on.
There is more overhead, and other crap that servers dont need. Not to mention, when the server is running, you cannot edit most config files, or replace plugins since they are all in use.

With linux, soooo much easier.
So much lighter, nicer, and does everything a sever should do.
/end rant

@purple_turtle what distro are you running? Ubuntu? Knoppix? Mint?
But as far as java on linux goes, [Might be slightly different with your distro]
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove <all of the oracle java stuffs>
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk -y
[The -y flag says yes to the upcoming prompt about downloading all the other packages to go along with it]
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
...
Profit!

Windows 2008 isn't that bad to be honest, RDP isn't as forgiving as SSH at high latency though - and then there's the £30 / month license shit (and I doubt any datacenter would let you run a pirate copy unless you install it without their knowledge).

Okay it's pretty shit compared with linux.

LOL too true.

@Purple, if your running Gnome 3 you'll notice the ugly ass Unity interface.
If you don't like it (like me) check out Mint Linux 12.

Also, for desktop customization, check out conky.
If you want my script like the one I have, lemme know.
